Update & next steps: property owners affected by the Spokane Complex Fire

On September 16, 2026, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it completed the household hazard material removal, funded by FEMA at the request of the State of Washington. According to EPA, they cleared 789 accessible impacted properties, removing more than 195,000 pounds of hazardous waste. EPA has not received funding to survey debris and ash for asbestos, or to remove the debris, therefore this will be up to each property owner.

To assist with the next steps, this webpage details the testing, notification, and disposal requirements for debris/ash from the structure fire. It also includes links to other agencies and resources. Review the page before removing debris/ash from your property.
