Are You Smoke Ready?

We are joining the Spokane Regional Health District and other agencies across the Pacific Northwest to promote wildfire smoke preparedness during Smoke Ready Week, June 1-5, with daily tips and resources across our social media channels!

According to Dr. Francisco Velázquez, SRHD Health Officer, “Exposure to wildfire smoke can affect your physical, mental and psychological health, so taking steps ahead of time to protect yourself and those you care about can provide peace of mind.”

Why be concerned about wildfire smoke? Smoke from fires contains harmful particles and compounds. When inhaled, smoke can cause or worsen several health problems, ranging from minor to severe. When smoke is present, the worst symptoms more often occur in people with pre-existing health conditions, though anyone can have symptoms or health problems. Some symptoms are burning eyes, a runny nose, coughing, fatigue, headache, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
