January is Radon Action Month and it is something to take seriously since elevated levels of radon have been found in the eastern Washington area, including Spokane.
What is Radon?
Radon is an invisible threat – it is odorless and colorless. The gas comes from the radioactive decay of radium, and Spokane’s geology makes this area especially susceptible to the gas, which seeps into homes from underground.
How can radon affect people’s health?
Exposure to radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second leading cause among non-smokers, according to the EPA.
What can I do to reduce my risk from radon exposure?
The EPA recommends that all homes in the U.S. be tested for radon and that tests be conducted at different times of the year. During winter, radon levels can be highest due to closed doors and windows, causing the gas to build up in the home with no outlet. Testing is easy and inexpensive- you can find DIY kits at your local hardware store, or by visiting this link, provided by the EPA.
