Residential Yard and Garden Debris

Residential yard and garden debris consists of leaves, needles, small tree and shrub prunings, and other natural yard and garden waste originating on residential improved property. Burning this natural vegetation may seem harmless to some. But it produces harmful, microscopic smoke particles. When inhaled, these particles can damage lung tissue. Children, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic respiratory conditions, such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis, are at an even greater risk from breathing smoke-filled air.

Because of the health effects of smoke exposure, burning yard and garden debris is not allowed in most areas of Spokane County. Residents are encouraged to use Alternatives to Burning Yard & Garden Debris. The only exception is for those residing within the following fire districts. These districts provide written permits for residential yard and garden debris burning; contact them for details:

Silvicultural burning on unimproved property is still allowed, depending on where you live. This type of burning on unimproved residential property, is administered by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
