Put the brakes on idling at schools

Fall brings the back-to-school season to schools across Spokane County, and with it comes new routines for students, educators, and parents! For many parents, this new routine includes dropping off and picking up their students from school. As vehicles line up at schools for afternoon pickup, it’s common to see them idling.

While it might seem harmless, unnecessary idling contributes to air pollution and exposes children to harmful vehicle exhaust. Children are especially susceptible to the harmful effects of air pollution because their lungs are not fully developed and they breathe 50% more air, per pound of body weight, than adults breathe! Idling near schools affects nearby homeowners as well. Spokane Clean Air has received numerous calls over the years from frustrated neighbors subjected to excessive idling in front of their homes.

Our No-Idle Zone voluntary program is designed to put the brakes on idling at schools. Strategically placed signage near the student drop-off and pick-up zones reminds drivers to simply turn off the engine while waiting. This program is intended to reduce unnecessary exhaust that students, staff, and neighbors are exposed to!

The No-Idle Zone program is provided to participating schools free of charge, including signs and materials. Currently, over 40 schools in Spokane County participate, spanning every school district and some private schools. The only exception is SPS, which launched its own Idle Free Zone program in 2023. Kudos to SPS for embracing the goal of improving children’s health around our schools!

If you are interested in bringing the No-Idle Zone to your school, details are provided here. If you’d like to learn more about the program before signing up, we are available to present to parent-teacher associations, school staff, and administrators.

Let’s all pledge to put the brakes on idling for our children’s health!
